For the past few months, my weekends, weekdays, evenings, nights, dreams, have been filled with things to do for the annual Purim Shpiel held at my temple. It’s all-encompassing, time-sucking, labor intensive event that I look forward to every year.
Last year was my first year getting involved with the Purim Shpiel and it was probably one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. It was an amazing opportunity to meet a lot of amazing people in an amazing way (too many amazings?). I mean, what better way to get to know someone than watching her pull a phone out of her shirt and complain about having to pole dance? The Shpiel brings out the goofiness in people (ya think?). The Shpiel gave me the community I was looking for when I joined my temple.
This year’s Purim Shpiel was called iPurim. After, yup, Apple. Coincidently the new iPad came out today. Each song had an app associated with it, and all of the music was by Stevie Wonder. The first thing I learned this year was that all those songs that I knew, but didn’t know who they were by? Yeah, they’re by Stevie Wonder. That music is just so gosh darn catchy.
The logo for iPurim, naturally was an hamantaschen. We Apple’d it up a bit with the white on black contrast and simple lines. Then I transfered that to cake with some vanilla cupcakes with black, chocolate icing, and a white chocolate iPurim logo. It was sweet.
The logos were made using my new favorite chocolate piping on wax paper method. I smartly thought to pipe the logos onto the paper backwards, so you could flip them over and have the smooth side facing up. I was very proud of that.
It’s been a long day, week, month, but the Shpiel went off without any major hitches. I had so much fun, but now I’m pooped. Of course…we already started talking about the theme for next year…
