After work today I decided to take a drive around Cape Canaveral Airforce Base and do some exploring. I’ve taken a right to get between our launch pad and our office a whole bunch of times, but I’ve never taken a left. So today I took a left.
The first thing I found after taking a left was this beach. I guess you can go fishing there, but no one was out when I took a stroll. The view ain’t bad though.
After getting back in my car and driving in a few circles, I happened upon this…
Yup, it’s one of the old shuttle pads. The other one has been dismantled, but this one is still up for the time being. This was about as close as I could get before getting a dirty look from the guard, but how cool is that?
This evening a group of us got together to go on a bioluminescent, night-time, kayak tour. There are only a few places in the world where you can experience the glowing waters from the glowing organisms living in them. And conveniently, one of those places isn’t too far from where we work. So we hopped in the car and proceeded to drive down ever-increasingly more deserted roads. After winding down back roads for a good thirty minutes, we arrived at the launch point just in time for it to…start raining.
We sat around for a while, but in the end we didn’t get to see the glowing waters. We still got a pretty good show though. The lightning strikes were frequent and intense. It poured all the way home, but I caught this lightning strike out the front windshield as we drove back.
