This past weekend Andrew and I headed up to Wisconsin for a wedding of two of his college friends. The wedding was in Madison, WI, but we made it a somewhat meandering trip before finally making it to our final destination.
We flew into Milwaukee (gotta use those Southwest free flight vouchers!) and headed down to Chicago to visit Elise and Jim! It was a short, but sweet visit where we got to eat lots of incredible food. Sadly I have no pictures of the amazing ricotta and honeycomb appetizer or the beet salad that we had when we got there on Friday night.
As an aside, I think this was the fifth time I’ve been to a small plates restaurant in the last four weeks. Has this gotten very trendy in the last month? Are my friends trying to start a trend? I’m not going to knock it. It’s an awesome way to get to try EVERYTHING on the menu (because, let’s be honest, I always want to try EVERYTHING on the menu).
Jim and Elise have a very…spirited cat named Bar, who possibly thinks she’s a dog. She warmed right up to Andrew because he let her wrestle with his hand (and let her nibble on his fingers) over and over again. Bar definitely has a mischievous side to her which was rather entertaining.
After a leisurely and delicious brunch on Saturday, we hit the road and made our way up to Beloit, WI. Andrew went to Beloit College which I had never heard of until he told me about it. Of course, now I find it comes up all over the place…on the radio, in articles…he consistently gets stopped on the street when he’s wearing a Beloit College t-shirt and ends up in 20 minute long conversations with fellow alums.
I liked Beloit. It’s TINY compared to Cornell though. I think his entire college could fit on our Arts Quad. There’s one dining hall and like 1300 students. In the entire school. His college is possibly smaller than my high school. It was very cute and collegiate looking.
After taking a brisk walk through campus (I think it took us less than 15 minutes to basically see the whole thing), we finally made our way up to Madison. After some slight miscommunication and poor planning, we met up with a whole boatload of Andrew’s friends from college. The wedding was lovely and unique (there was a Chinese lion dance!) and it was fun to catch up with everyone (or meet most of them in my case). I did sit a table where I was on the only girl though, which led me having flashbacks of my college days in the engineering school.
We’re back in MD after our whirlwind trip to the Midwest. After going to New York a few weeks ago and Wisconsin this past weekend, I’m looking forward to a more low-key next few weeks.
