Air and Space

 67/365

This morning Erin, Mike, Andrew, and I headed out to the Udvar-Hazy museum. Mike loves space and astronomy and neither Mike nor Erin had ever been there before. The Udvar-Hazy museum is an extension of the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum. It’s out by Dulles Airport and is basically a huge hanger where they have dozens and dozens of full-sized military, commercial, recreational, and other aircraft. There’s also a space section which has a space shuttle, space artifacts, and a number of full-sized satellite models.

We made out there during the late morning and walked around for a couple of hours marveling at how ridiculous some of the airplanes were and the fact that back in the day you could basically by a build-your-own-airplane kit and, well, build your own airplane. Naturally, I was partial to the space section. A couple of years ago when they retired the space shuttles, they shuffled the shuttles on display around the country and we ended up with the Discovery shuttle. The shuttle was a lot more beat up than I was expecting, but it was still pretty awesome.

After the museum we went to a restaurant called Sweetwater Tavern. By the time we got there, I think we were all ready to eat our own arms off, so it was a lovely surprise that not only did the food come with a lot of disclaimers, it was also really good. It was quite a pleasant way to spend a beautiful day.
