Today was Aly’s 8th birthday. To celebrate this milestone, she had a roller skating birthday party. Conveniently enough, this happens to be just right up my alley, so I was honored to be invited. I was also honored to be the only guest over the age of 10 who did not come toting a small child.
When I got to the skating rink, things were hoppin’. Kids had skates and were failing, falling, gripping the wall for dear life, and a small percentage were even skating. Little kids on skates is so funny. They look like little deer getting used to being upright. However, they are resilient. Fall after fall they get right back up and it’s amazing all the ways their legs can bend seemingly without consequence.
All-in-all, I think the kids had a lot of fun. I made a new best friend who held my hand for a good part of the afternoon and persuaded me to stay a little longer each time I tried to leave. I felt like I was being courted by an eight your old. By the end of the day, a lot of the kids had gotten a hang of skating. Well, they got the hang of being upright and moderately propelling themselves forward. There’s derby potential there!
Of course, being with my favorite three kids meant I had to get some photo time in. Jackson continues to be a little heartbreaker. I mean, look at that face! Aubrey loves getting her picture taken but this time was really insistent that it be taken with a large slice of pizza in her mouth. Who can blame her, it looks great!
It was a fun but exhausting afternoon. I was all tuckered out after the party so I had to come home and take a nap. Almost-30-year-old me really can’t keep up with all these eight year olds!
