I got up obscenely early this morning to go run the Baltimore 10 Miler. Betsy was kind enough to pick me up at the bright and early hour of 6 AM so we could head up to Baltimore to run this race.
Neither of us was particularly psyched about running this race because neither of us had done a lot of training for it. But we’ve both done it a number of times in the past and generally enjoyed it (even though there are lots of hills. We conveniently forget about that each year), so we keep signing up for it again year after year.
Our goal for the race (and for most races for me) was to just finish. At the start we were standing near one of the pace groups and I decided to see if I could keep up. I stayed with them for about 4.5 miles until I had to make a pitstop to use the bathroom and after that I kind of lost my momentum. It also didn’t help that the second half of the race was more uphill than the first. They’ve changed the course from previous years though and instead of ending on a 2 mile up hill, now it’s only a mile-and-a-half. I’ll take it.
We both ended up finishing successfully. The weather was cool which helped a lot and ended up crossing the finish line within about 10 minutes of each other. We collected our watermelon slices and race premiums and it was only 10 AM.
Our friend Mike was running, leading one of the pace groups and we were able to catch up with him after the race. He’s a speedy runner so it’s always fun to look for him ahead of us on the course. I took that lead picture so I’m not sure why my eyes are closed, but that’s us after we all completed the race. I think we actually don’t look too bad.
So, ten miles in the books. 26.2 is still looking a little daunting though.
