This evening Andrew and I headed into the city to see a new adaptation of the Franz Kafka novella, The Metamorphosis. I can’t say Kafka is generally on my list of theater options, but I had a good reason to trek into the city for this one. My friend Ari is the star of the play! I’ve known Ari since we were four and have been following as he performs in musicals, plays, performs original music, or as an entertainer on cruise ships, literally around the world. He’s been in the DC area of few times over the past four or five years and I always make it a point to go see his performances when he’s in town.
This one was definitely out of the box. I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect and man, this was a crazy performance. I didn’t know the story beforehand, but Ari really carried the show. The pure range he had to cover as a man, as a son, as a brother, and as a bug (yes, it’s part of the story) was really impressive. He was up and down, climbing, jumping, fighting, hanging upsidedown, all while singing and acting. It’s no wonder he was a sweaty mess when he was done.
It was really good to see him though and hopefully we can meet up again before he leaves town to really catch up.
